China off to a Fighting Start in Taekwondo

LI Chen (CHN) won gold in the women's -73kg class to help China get off to strong start in taekwondo at the 7th CISM Military World Games on Oct. 23.

LI outscored Vanessa Maria KOERNDL (GER) 10-5 in the last of four bouts on the program of the first of four days of taekwondo. The bronze medals went to Maristella SMIRAGLIA (ITA) and Raiany FIDELIS (BRA).

LI Zhaoyi (CHN) added to the medal haul for the host country with bronze in women's -49kg, which was won by Madinabonu MANNOPOVA (UZB). Egypt's Nour ABDELSALAM took silver while Germany's Ela AYDIN took the other bronze medal.

In the men's action, Firas KATOUSSI (TUN) won gold in the -74kg class, while Ruslan ZHAPAROV (KAZ) was the winner of the +87kg class.

Competition resumes on Oct. 24, with bouts in the men's -58kg and -68kg classes, and women's -46kg and +73kg classes.
