Construction work on a world-class auto racetrack located in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (also known as WHDZ) is scheduled to begin in 2020, according to a report in the Changjiang Daily.
The professional racetrack will be developed according to the standards of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, or FIA -- the international governing body for many top global auto racing events, WHDZ officials said.
They said it will be 4.3 kilometers in length and be able to host a number of top international and domestic auto and motorcycle events, and even host the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.
On completion of the new racetrack, Wuhan will be the only domestic city that boasts two professional tracks for hosting car and motorcycle events.
The WHDZ successfully hosted the AEOLUS China Automobile and Motorcycle Sports Festival 2019 which ran from Dec 12 to 15. It attracted the participation of more than 230 racing drivers from over 30 countries and regions including the US, the UK, France and Japan.
According to an agreement signed by Wuhan and the Federation of Automobile and Motorcycle Sports of China, Wuhan will be the venue for five sessions of the China Automobile and Motorcycle Sports Festival.
Starting in 2020, the China Automobile and Motorcycle Sports Festival will be hosted in mid-May.
More auto-related events are expected to be held in Wuhan city, including the FIA F4 Chinese Championship and the China Electric Car Championship.
