Major auto manufacturer Dongfeng Motor Co is to work with Wuhan University in developing intelligent automobiles following a strategic cooperation agreement signed on June 23, according to officials at the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone, located in Wuhan city in Central China's Hubei province, where Donfeng Motor is based.

The two sides will focus on the requirements in the development field for intelligent automobiles.

Officials said they will carry out extensive, in-depth and multi-faceted efforts in such aspects as forward-looking innovation, solving key core technical problems, speeding up the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and stimulating scientific development.

Officials added that both sides were committed to establishing long-term, comprehensive and stable strategic relations.

Since 2013, Dongfeng Motor Co and Wuhan University have initiated project cooperation in the field of autonomous driving.

Last year, they further proposed the idea of strengthening their strategic cooperation.

After more than half a year of research, demonstrations and practices, officials said the two parties had reached consensus on the direction and areas of cooperation -- and work together in some projects and areas has already achieved preliminary results.

Moving forwards, Dongfeng Motor Co and Wuhan University will combine their respective strengths to deepen their strategic cooperation in the four major areas of scientific research cooperation, cooperative exchange and exploration, transformation of innovative achievements and deepening general campus-company links.

Officials said the company and university will promote the introduction of strategic cooperation achievements through joint construction of laboratories and makerspace center.

They will look at cooperation in specific projects and personnel training and exchanges -- and gradually build a joint forward-looking technology research institute to jointly build an industrial development innovation ecosystem.
