Auto manufacturer Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co – based in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, capital of Central China’s Hubei province – has made big progress in its waste classification and treatment, with 35 percent of industrial waste output reduced annually, according to WHDZ officials.

Through sorting, recycling and processing of industrial waste at fixed time points, Dongfeng Honda processed 19,905.8 tons of industrial waste in 2019, realizing the resource regeneration of 79,741.27 tons of recyclable industrial waste.

A company spokesman said that since its establishment in 2003, Dongfeng Honda has been committed to practicing the concept of developing as a green manufacturer. It has focused on the classification, recycling and utilization of industrial waste -- and continuously increased its coverage rate for waste recycling.

He said that in July 2019, the accuracy rate of waste classification reached 100 percent, making Dongfeng Honda one of the first companies in the WHDZ to achieve complete waste classification.

The company started to treat industrial solid waste in a benign manner since it first went into operation in 2004 and passed the Waste Disposal Regulations in 2011, incorporating its recyclables system into its corporate management.

Dongfeng Honda has established recycling centers in three factory areas, as designated recycling transfer stations. Each plant is managed by a dedicated member of staff.

The industrial waste is subdivided into 40 categories and each category has developed a standardized recycling process.

The spokesman said Dongfeng Honda is currently carrying out solid waste recycling with 13 companies, sorting out recycling channels and optimizing the layout of recycling outlets.

White foam plastic, for example, is treated in a benign manner, while sorted steel scrap is transported to Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Co for reuse.
