Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei province, has made considerable progress in 5G construction, with the 5G network coverage rate reaching nearly 90 percent in the zone – among the highest in the city, according to local media reports.

Full 5G signal coverage in the development zone should be achieved before the end of this year.

The 5G industry is touted to be one of the most promising sectors for the future, and the 5G network is one of the most critical new infrastructures.

According to WHDZ officials, the development zone plans to build its first 500 5G signal base stations this year. As of Aug 17, 439 base stations had been completed – 87.8 percent of the year-end goal.

As one of the main drivers of Wuhan’s industrial economic growth, WHDZ has promoted several leading 5G application scenarios.

The Wuhan Jingkai Foreign Language School in the WHDZ is to become the first school in the province to offer 5G coverage, following a campus relocation and upgrade, which began on July 31.

On June 12, an unmanned minibus dubbed ‘Sharing-VAN,’ developed by automaker Dongfeng Motor Co, began mass production, with the first batch of six vehicles rolling off the production line on the same day.

Sharing-VAN has reached the highest level of autonomous driving currently available – Level 4, a state of highly autonomous driving that is one step below fully autonomous driving (Level 5).

In the National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Wuhan) Test and Demonstration Zone, a new 28-kilometer test road for intelligent road network vehicle demonstrations and applications has been completed.

The facility is the first intelligent network-connected vehicle demonstration area in China, based on full coverage by the 5G communications technology V2X vehicle road coordination system.
