The Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) – located in Wuhan city in Central China's Hebei province – has gone on the move to advance the next generation of automobiles, according to local media reports.

It will partner up to promote them with the Wuhan University of Technology, or WUT, in the wake of a framework agreement which was signed by the two sides on Oct 7.

The two sides plan to jointly develop a new energy automotive industry technology research institute, an artificial intelligence (AI) industry technology research institute and an AI graduate school, with an investment of some 3 billion yuan ($447 million).

The joint construction project will rely on the core technology and expertise of WUT to strengthen the deep integration of the two sides.

This will be in such areas as artificial intelligence and materials, computers, information, automation, transportation, automobiles and electromechanical endeavors.

Based on the construction of AI theory and algorithm research centers, major industrial research centers and platforms will be established. These will cover five main areas: intelligent connected vehicles, AI ships and intelligent Yangtze River shipping, intelligent robots and AI equipment, rehabilitation robots, as well as new artificial intelligence materials.

Also, the partners will focus on establishing an industrialization platform.

This will build an application technology innovation platform, a public testing platform, a technology service platform and an investment and financing platform. It will provide support for Wuhan's automobile and hydrogen energy industry with top technical staff, technological innovation and industrial incubation bases.
