China's first city intelligent road construction standard was approved in the city of Wuhan in Central China's Hubei province on Oct 19. The standard acts as a guideline for regional intelligent road construction, and also lays a foundation for large-scale smart infrastructure layouts.

To date, there are a total of 16 intelligent connected vehicle testing demonstration zones in China, along with 3,500 kilometers of testing roads.

Incentivized by the market, auto enterprises have taken the initiative to explore self-driving cars, but previously lacked a unified intelligent road construction standard.

As of July this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Ministry of Transport jointly issued documents to support the application of intelligent connected vehicle technology testing and commercialization. After that, the Wuhan municipal bureau of economy and information technology arranged more than 10 government departments, enterprises and research institutes to formulate the nation's first intelligent road construction standard.

The standard clarifies the need to establish complete smart road facilities and supporting platforms involving data, management, application and security, and puts forward access requirements for road testing of different risk levels of intelligent connected vehicles.
