State Power Investment Co's (SPIC's) proton exchange membrane production line officially began operating on Dec 5 at the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ). The proton exchange membrane is a key component in hydrogen fuel cells and the production line is expected to reduce China's dependence on proton exchange membrane exports, and to achieve the manufacturing localization of key parts for hydrogen fuel cells.

In addition, a technology center to be jointly built by SPIC Hydrogen Energy Co and Wuhan University of Technology and Hubei Hydrogen Power Technology Service Co was launched the same day.

Based on their long-term partnership, SPIC Hydrogen Energy Co and Wuhan University of Technology will devote themselves to the research and industrialization of core materials used in the hydrogen energy industry. The newly-launched technology center will boost technology transfers and help cultivate research talent and teams for the university.

Zhang Qingjie, an academician at Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of the university, underscored the importance of the project, which will lower the cost of making hydrogen fuel cells and marks a major step forward for China in the fuel cell core material sector.

Hubei Hydrogen Power Tehcnology Service Co will reportedly focus on purchasing and managing fuel cell vehicles and seek to provide overall operational solutions for clients in public sanitation, logistics and many other sub-divided areas.

WHDZ has been assisting corporations in the application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in a variety of scenarios. To date, there are 21 such buses in use in the zone.
