In a bid to address every weak link "from the field to the table", the government of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone revealed its intention to raise the qualification rate of agricultural products to 98 percent within a year, according to local reports on March 22.

With an area of nearly 500 square kilometers and 157 sq m for agriculture, the zone produces special agricultural products such as sweet maize, watermelons, crabs, soft-shelled turtles and eels.

Its three major agricultural sectors – farming, seafood, and pig raising – have already been included in the commodity quality regulation system. "The qualification rate of agricultural products in our country is currently 97 percent, and bringing this figure up to 98 percent or more means reaching the highest standard in the domestic market," said an official from the zone's bureau of agriculture and rural affairs.

Through years of strenuous effort, 29 agricultural units in the zone have established agricultural product quality traceability systems that enable data sharing on municipal platforms. This allows every product to have its own traceable identity through internet and big data technologies.

The zone currently has 14 enterprises producing agricultural products that are up to official standards and 45 types of organic food and geographical indication agricultural products. It has not suffered any major incidents related to the quality of its agricultural products in this regard for the past 16 years.
