The Hubei Provincial Automotive-Grade Chip Technological Innovation Consortium was officially launched in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) on May 8. The independent production of automotive-grade chips is considered an effective way to facilitate the sustainable development of China's automobile industry.

The innovation consortium is an alliance encouraged by the government and established jointly by enterprises, research institutes and universities, which may have distinct development goals and specialties but share some common goals, such as addressing emerging challenges, undertaking major technological tasks, and boosting innovation across the industrial chain.

The consortium was initiated by leading Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor Co, Wuhan Fisilink Microelectronics Technology Co, Wuhan University of Technology (WUT), Huazhong University of Science and Technology and five other members, and will focus on the scientific frontier and domestic market demand for auto chips. It will work to design, manufacture, test and apply automotive-grade chips.

Zhang Qingjie, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at WUT, was selected as the chief scientist of the consortium.
