A circular issued by the Wuhan municipal education bureau on May 23 suggests that by 2035, the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) will establish 33 new schools and expand and upgrade five schools.

According to a construction plan released by the zone for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), the zone will build 48 primary and secondary schools with a total enrollment capacity of 62,460 for a planned population of 1.2 million. Among them, eight schools are planned in Junshan New City, with an enrollment capacity of 11,910.

By 2035, WEDZ will be home to more than 100 schools capable of enrolling a combined 150,000 students.

Officials from the Wuhan municipal education bureau highlighted the role of WEDZ as a major economic growth engine for Wuhan, especially in the industrial field. Nearly 20,000 high-end professionals work there, meaning the zone is in urgent need of more schools.
