On the streets of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), more than 10 kinds of autonomous cars are undergoing trial operations, including taxis, buses, vending trolleys, and logistics cars.

The National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Wuhan) Pilot Testing Zone based in WEDZ is China's sixth such testing zone. After over three years of development, the testing zone has formed an intelligent vehicle infrastructure cooperative system. In May 2021, Wuhan was approved as part of the first group of national smart city infrastructure and intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) pilot zones.

In 2019, the Wuhan auto-city project commenced, helping WEDZ achieve coordinated development between automobiles and cities while striving to promote the intelligentization and electrification of cars.

The project consists of auto-city infrastructure and applications, gaining access to all intelligent infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, and sensing and monitoring devices in Wuhan, and has established 160 square kilometers of 3D models of the city's landscapes. A total of 106 kilometers of roads have been upgraded, with 1,800 road side units installed.
