News from the development and reform bureau of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) on Sept 8 suggested that 10 enterprises have made the 2022 list of R&D institutions at or above the provincial level, raising the total number in the zone to 81.

Among the 10 R&D institutions, seven are owned by specific companies involved in automobiles, auto spare parts, construction engineering, new materials and environmental protection.

The other three have been approved as provincial engineering research centers, which usually boast advanced innovation mechanisms, sustained R&D investments, research teams rich in practical experience, and great development potential.

In recent years, WEDZ has been collecting innovative elements, formulating an innovative environment, and promoting technological breakthroughs, especially in automobiles, home appliances, smart manufacturing, new energy, new materials and biomedicine.

It has cultivated 82 gazelle enterprises, 236 technology-based little giant companies, and more than 500 high-tech firms.

The zone will strive to cultivate over 100 R&D institutions at or above the provincial level by 2025.
