The Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) recently signed a "lake and river chief + academician" cooperation mechanism memorandum with the research team of Ren Nanqi, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the director of the State Key Laboratory for Urban Water Resources and Environment, on April 13.

The two sides will closely collaborate on water environment governance, and help the zone to become a demonstration area for the sustainable development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

The academician was also appointed as the chief expert of WEDZ's lake and river chief work team.

As one of China's top specialists in water environment governance, Ren has put forward the "urban water recycle system 4.0" theory, effectively guiding the nation's sponge city construction and solving the problem of black and odorous water bodies.

In 2016, Ren set up an experimental black and odorous water body governance demonstration base in Wuhan Shengyu Drainage System Co, and guided the company to apply the effluent segregation system solution, which was then promoted nationwide.

After adopting this solution, the water quality of Tanghu Lake in WEDZ has been raised from Class V to IV. At present, the solution has been applied to all the lakes in the zone.

According to the cooperation memorandum, the zone and the academician's research team will jointly conduct integrated work relating to urban water security, water environment governance guarantees, healthy water recycling, and smart water ecology, so as to form replicable and applicable ecological environment models.
