Construction work began on 309 old residential areas in Hohhot – capital city of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region – with a groundbreaking ceremony held on April 18, according to local media reports.

The residential quarters cover an area of 4.2 million square meters in four districts and other counties and banners under Hohhot's administration, benefiting an estimated 51,085 households.

The projected investment is 1.83 billion yuan ($266 million).

The planned revamps include roof work, roads and infrastructure repairs. It also includes upgrades to water supplies, drainage, gas supplies, heating pipe networks, waterproofing and streetlights.

Through the construction and renovation work during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Hohhot has renovated 725 old urban communities, with a construction area of some 9.96 million square meters, benefiting 112,000 households.
