Zhejiang Provincial People's Government approved the establishment of Nantaihu (literally meaning "South of Taihu Lake") New Area in Huzhou on April 30.

One of four new areas in the Zhejiang Great Bay Area, an economic and industrial belt centered around Hangzhou Bay, the Nantaihu New Area will cover 225 square kilometers and feature key Huzhou industrial zones such as Huzhou Economic & Technological Zone.

The new area will adopt a system of one platform, one management team and several institutes under the administration of a new committee.

Zhejiang is poised to build up its Greater Bay Area into a world-class industrial hub amid efforts to provide strong support for its development, explained Xie Xiaobo, an official from the Zhejiang Development and Reform Commission, at a news conference in August 2018.

According to Xie, focusing on six major areas, including innovation, urban development, transportation, the open economy and ecology, the Great Bay Area is designed to act as a driving force for the industrial upgrading and the development of the digital economy in the province as a whole.

Huzhou, a key city in the Yangtze River Delta, is located in the metropolitan circle of Hangzhou and is expected to be an active participant in the Great Bay Area's construction.
