The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently unveiled the fifth group of national green manufacturing demonstration entities.

Green manufacturing, also referred to as green production, is when manufacturing companies (regardless of scale) look to upgrade any outdated forms of production and opt for more environmental manufacturing solutions which reduce the amount of waste they produce.

An industrial park, seven factories, seven supply-chain management companies, and 23 design products in Huzhou made the list.

To date, Huzhou is home to four green industrial parks, 44 green factories, 17 green supply-chain management companies and 49 green design products, with the total number ranking high among prefecture-level cities in the nation.

As the nation's first pilot city for green manufacturing, Huzhou has made great efforts in recent years to optimize its industrial structure by phasing out backward capacity and promoting the level of intellectualization in the manufacturing industry with the ultimate goal of constructing a green, low-carbon and sustainable industrial system.

Last year, it shut down 222 enterprises with backward production capacity and improved 4,217 enterprises with low capacity, primarily in high energy consumption sectors such as cement, casting, printing, dying, and chemistry. The campaign freed up a significant amount of land. Last year, 15,045 mu (1,003 hectares) of land was freed up, which has the potential to bring in new investment.

A grading system for green factories has been formulated in the city, spurring enterprises to pursue ecofriendly development, said a head official from the Huzhou municipal bureau of economy and information technology.

The local government has also rolled out a three-year action plan to advance industrial digitalization as it looks to become a digital leader in Zhejiang and the country as a whole.
