Innovation injects new vitality into Huzhou writing brush industry
When a set of Huzhou writing brushes from Shanlian town in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, was presented as a national gift at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit, it highlighted the exquisite craftsmanship behind these traditional tools.
In Shanlian town, a modern industry cluster centered on Huzhou writing brushes now boasts an annual output value nearing 1 billion yuan ($141.73 million).
The town, known for its long history of making traditional Chinese writing brushes, has evolved into a thriving industry hub. With over 400 related companies and nearly 1,600 employees, its annual production has risen from 14 million brushes five years ago to 20 million today.
Under the local government's guidance, Shanlian has developed a comprehensive industrial chain, from production to handle engraving and packaging design.

The younger generation, led by entrepreneurs like Lyu Tao, is driving digital innovation while preserving the traditional craft. Lyu's e-commerce initiatives have increased revenues for participating companies by 50 percent, and his training programs have equipped over 200 local youths with e-commerce skills.
Since 2019, Shanlian's flagship store for Huzhou writing brushes on e-commerce platforms has expanded its product line to cater to a wide range of consumers, reaching calligraphy enthusiasts across the globe.
Innovation remains key, with local cultural products like the "Lucky Writing Brushes" achieving significant market success.
To promote the integrated development of culture and tourism, Shanlian town has actively enriched its tourism offerings, becoming a hotspot for visitors eager to try their hand at making Huzhou writing brushes.
