At the modern agricultural demonstration park in Rudong county, Nantong, an ice plant cultivation base primarily supplies the Yangtze River Delta market. With 2.67 hectares of greenhouses, the farm delivers approximately 1,000 kilograms of ice plants daily.

According to Gao Houqin, the farm's manager, the ice plant's harvest season lasts over six months, from October of last year to May of this year. Although its yield is lower compared to other vegetables, its market price is favorable, generating an annual income of about 100,000 yuan ($13,723.7).

The ice plant's unique features, including liquid-filled, bubble-like cells on its leaves and stems, give it a natural salty taste due to the plant salts contained in its crystals. This vegetable can be enjoyed in various ways, such as in salads or hot pots, offering a refreshing and satisfying texture.

"Ice plants are delicious and not hard to grow, as long as the greenhouse temperature and humidity are well-controlled," Gao explained. She noted that after relocating the farm to Rudong, the advanced greenhouse infrastructure, combined with a smartphone app for daily management, has made farming more convenient and efficient.

The smart agriculture model ensures stable production and boosts Gao's confidence in expanding her market. "Ice plants are a new type of vegetable, popular mainly among younger consumers. I've opened up online sales channels with great results. Currently, customers place orders during the peak harvest season, and we deliver directly to their doorsteps—about 200 boxes per day," Gao said.
