Sanqishi town in Yuyao, a county-level city in Ningbo, has a long history of planting waxberries, and the fruit has promoted rural vitalization and common prosperity in the town.

Sanqishi town has long been one of the main waxberry-producing regions in Yuyao.

Its acidic soil and weather support the growth of waxberries. The fruit from the town is famed for its juicy and sweet taste.

According to Flora of China Illustrations, the eleocharis waxberries, the best variety of waxberries from Yuyao, which have been being planted for more than 2,000 years, originated in the town. The fruit was brought as tribute to emperors during the Han Dynasty (206BC-220).

The Guyang Waxberry Forest in Sanqishi town, is still home to more than 100 waxberry trees that are over 150 years old.

The plantation area of waxberry in the town now stands at 800 hectares, and the annual waxberry production in the town is about 5,000 metric tons.

The eleocharis waxberries have also been promoted and planted in 15 provinces across the country, including Yunnan, Sichuan, Fujian and Hunan, and have helped increase the incomes of farmers.

In recent years, the town has launched many tourism projects centering on waxberries, such as a waxberry-picking route which connects seven villages in the town, an eco-agricultural industrial park and a garden party.

A Song Dynasty (960-1279)-style garden party was held in the town on June 21, attracting many hanfu lovers looking to experience Song culture and the fruit harvest. The activity was also livestreamed online and received over 300,000 views.
