Hanggin Banner in Ordos city was recently granted the honorable title of “National Civilized City.” It is one of the four banners in Ordos to win the city-level honor and the only desert settlement among the award-winning cities.

The honor was announced at the National Spiritual Civilization Construction Commendation Conference recently held in Beijing.

Hanggin Banner is located on the south bank of the Yellow River, with a total area of 18,900 square kilometers and a population of 146,000.

Hanggin Banner was once one of the most impoverished counties in China due to its extensive desert coverage. Nearly 10,000 square kilometers of its territory is covered by the Kubuqi Desert, the seventh-largest desert in China.

Over the years, Hanggin Banner has prioritized the environment and accelerated its moves towards high-quality green development, operating under the philosophy that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.”

After more than 30 years of treatment, around 6,000 square kilometers of the Kubuqi Desert has become an oasis. The grassland coverage of Hanggin Banner has increased from 5 percent in 1988 to 53 percent in 2018.

Hanggjin Banner has achieved a historic change from "sands forcing people to retreat" to "retreating sands and incoming greenery."

Meanwhile, Hanggin Banner is continuously improving its business environment to attract investment.

The banner currently has 34 enterprises above designated size, and a "million kilowatt-level" new energy power generation base has been built in the Kubuqi Desert.
