Adhering to the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets," Kangbashi district in the city of Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has prioritized its environment and made significant progress in the sector.

In recent years, Kangbashi has continued to promote the construction of the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program in Northwest, North and Northeast China and the treatment of sandstorm sources in Beijing and Tianjin.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), a total of 9.8 million square meters of afforestation and greening were carried out, and the district has a forest coverage rate of 35 percent, which is 12 percentage points higher than the national average.

The current Kangbashi urban area has a green coverage rate of 42.63 percent, accounting for nearly two-fifths of the built-up area.

It also boasts 18 open park squares, 72 sq m of green park space per capita, and three rivers surrounding the district.

In 2020, the rate of good air quality in Kangbashi district was 90.8 percent, an increase of four percent over the previous year.

In addition, the quality of the surface water of the Ulan Mulun watershed has been rated three-class every month, and the number of black and odorous water bodies has been kept at zero.

Through unremitting efforts, the PM2.5 concentration in Kangbashi district has been maintained at 0.025 mg per cubic meter for many years, and the air quality has continued to be excellent.

The district's soil pollution prevention and control action plan was fully implemented as well, with the harmless treatment rate of hazardous waste such as industrial waste and medical waste reaching 100 percent.

Over the years, Kangbashi district has successfully established a "National Model Unit for Greening" and a "National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone".

With its positive ecological city image, Kangbashi district has also successfully hosted the 13th conference of parties involved in the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought or Desertification, Particularly in Africa.
