Ordos makes list of China’s top 100 cities

The city of Ordos in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region made the list of China’s top 100 cities in 2022, ranking 32nd place.

This was stated in a research report released by the Warton Economic Institute in Shanghai on June 30.

Statistics from the report show that Beijing and Shanghai have consistently ranked in the top two in terms of comprehensive scores and soft and hard economic indicators for the past eight years.

In addition, the top 100 cities achieved a total GDP of 80.44 trillion yuan ($12.07 trillion) and general public budget revenue of 7.54 trillion yuan, and the balance of RMB deposits in financial institutions at the end of the year was 170.91 trillion yuan.

Meanwhile, the total R&D investment in the top 100 cities reached 2.13 trillion yuan, accounting for 87.22 percent of the national total.

Their economic aggregate has accounted for more than 70 percent of the country's total for a long time, and their status as the main battlefield for stabilizing the economy, maintaining growth and promoting development is irreplaceable.

The city of Ordos has witnessed better economic and social development in recent years.

In 2021, its GDP reached 471.57 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.0 percent. 

The added value of the primary industry came in at 14.84 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.4 percent, while the added value of the secondary industry was 307.79 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.4 percent. The added value of the tertiary industry was 148.94 billion yuan, an increase of 8.0 percent over the previous year.

In terms of its various industries, its economic and social development showed the following characteristics:

Service industry

Last year, the added value of the service industry in Ordos increased by 8 percent year-on-year, and its contribution to economic growth came in at 44.9 percent.

From January to November 2021, the city's service industry enterprises above a designated size achieved an operating income of 34.65 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.8 percent. Among the 24 major industry categories, 19 industries achieved operating income growth, while 15 industries maintained double-digit growth in operating income.

Investment

In 2021, the city's fixed asset investment increased by 20.8 percent year-on-year, ranking second in Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Meanwhile, annual industrial investment increased by 21.8 percent, accounting for 62.3 percent of total fixed asset investment and an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the previous year.

Residents' incomes 

Last year, the per capita disposable income of all residents in Ordos reached 45,638 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.7 percent.

The per capita disposable income of urban permanent residents was 53,676 yuan, while that of rural residents was 23,583 yuan.

Employment

In 2021, 20,154 people found jobs in the urban areas of Ordos and the registered urban unemployment rate was maintained at 3.11 percent.
