The city of Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region recently got the green light from the State Council to build a National Sustainable Development Agenda Innovation Demonstration Zone.
The planned scope of the innovation demonstration zone is the whole of Ordos city, covering two districts and seven banners, with a total area of 86,800 square kilometers.
The zone will focus on "desertification control and green development".
A total of five actions involving desertification control, innovation in the efficient utilization of water resources, the high-quality development of modern energy economy, the improvement of agriculture, animal husbandry, rural tourism development, and the strengthening of innovation-driven development capacity will be taken.
They aim to solve problems such as a low degree of industrialization of ecological construction and a lack of resource-based industrial chains and create a global model for desertification control and a leading area for modern energy and economic development and the integrated development of grassland culture and tourism.
The National Sustainable Development Agenda Innovation Demonstration Zone is a pragmatic measure for China to promote the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".
Through the construction of the demonstration zone, a group of replicable and popular sustainable development models will be formed to share Chinese experience with other countries. It will also serve as a model for similar regions.
So far, the State Council has approved the construction of 11 National Sustainable Development Agenda Innovation Demonstration Zones.
