The city of Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region is ramping up efforts to invest in new energy as the city goes full throttle in its green energy transition.
In the past, coal and related industries accounted for more than 50 percent of the total economic output of Ordos.
Today, Ordos regards new energy as the main direction of energy structure adjustment and leads the transformation of its industrial structure and economic structure with the transformation of the energy structure.
Ordos is working to build five industrial clusters for wind energy, hydrogen energy, solar energy, hydrogen energy storage and new energy vehicles and build itself into a national modern energy industry base.
In 2021, Ordos added 563,000 kW of new energy installed capacity, accounting for 30 percent of the total newly-added power capacity that year.
In April 2022, the first phase of the world's first zero-carbon industrial park, the Vision Ordos Zero-Carbon Industrial Park, was completed and put into operation in the Ordos Mengsu Economic Development Zone.
The industrial park is based on three pillars of innovation: the new power system, the zero-carbon digital operating system and the green new industrial cluster.
The clean, stable and efficient new power system formed by wind turbines, photovoltaics, energy storage and intelligent internet of things in the industrial park provides a 100-percent zero-carbon energy supply for battery production.
Additionally, the Hanggin Economic Development Zone in Ordos has a daily processing capacity of 4.64 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas and a new energy power generation project with a total installed capacity of 1.5 million kW, making it the first new energy power generation base in Ordos at the million-kW level.
