The city of Ordos – located in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region – is making every effort to build world-class new energy and equipment manufacturing sectors.
Under a plan, by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), the total output value of five major industries in Ordos - wind energy, solar power, hydrogen energy, new energy vehicles and energy storage – will top 500 billion yuan ($71.32 billion).
That will make the city the world's largest solar power industry base, the largest energy storage industry base, the largest hydrogen energy industry base and the largest new energy heavy truck base.
Ordos is located between 37 degrees and 40 degrees north latitude and possesses great conditions for new energy.
The annual total solar radiation in most parts of the city is 5,600-6,000 megajoules per square meter and the annual average sunshine hours can reach 3,100.
Meanwhile, Hanggin Banner, Otog Banner and Otog Front Banner in the jurisdiction of the city are located in the narrow and long tuyere area between Langshan Mountain and Yinshan Mountain.
These are the main passages for Siberia's cold air going south. They have high wind energy quality, many effective wind hours and high wind stability and continuity.
As of 2021, the city had installed 3.38 million kilowatts of new energy, including 445,000 kW of wind power, 2.87 million kW of solar power generation, and 60,000 kW of biomass power generation.
The total installed capacity has increased by more than 3 million kW compared with 2012.
In 2021, Ordos also got the green light to build a 7.2 million-kW new energy project and successfully held the first zero-carbon industry summit.
