Ordos, a city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, is leveraging the advantages of its expansive desert landscapes, including the majestic Gobi areas, to develop new energy industries. This strategic endeavor positions Ordos as a pioneering force in green transformation and development.
Currently, within the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert, an ambitious undertaking is underway in Dalad Banner, Ordos, to establish the world's largest production base for wind and solar power.
Spanning across the Kubuqi Desert, the seventh-largest desert in China, this groundbreaking project aspires to achieve an astounding total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts.
It comprises an impressive combination of energy sources, featuring 8 million kW of photovoltaic solar power, 4 million kW of wind power, and an additional 4 million kW from advanced high-efficiency coal power.
Remarkably, this endeavor represents the first of its kind in the nation, boasting a colossal 10-million-kW-level new energy base. Its implementation necessitates a substantial investment of over 80 billion yuan ($14.41 billion).
Furthermore, in the hinterland of the Kubuqi Desert, rapid progress is being made in the construction of the country's largest solar power project.
The project aims to adopt a pioneering model wherein electricity generation occurs atop solar photovoltaic panels. The area between the panels will be utilized for planting, effectively restoring the desertified land beneath.
Following a period of 25 years, the restored land will be returned to farmers and herders, enabling them to engage in further planting and grazing activities.
