The Ordos Carbon Neutrality Research Institute, in collaboration with Peking University, recently released the findings of their "Wind-Solar Complementarity Analysis in Ordos" project.

This research provides technical support for the integrated use of green energy and the optimization of future energy systems in the Ordos region.

The project involves an in-depth study of wind and solar resources in Ordos, revealing their complementary characteristics. It proposes developing a "wind-solar-load-storage" integrated energy system.

The study indicates that wind resources are predominantly abundant in the northern parts of Ordos, particularly in Hanggin Banner, Dalad Banner, and Juungar Banner.

Meanwhile, solar resources increase from the southeast to the northwest, with the northwest region of Hanggin Banner identified as the most solar-rich area. Ordos is poised to significantly enhance its energy output efficiency by developing these dispersed wind and solar resources.

The project's findings will serve as a basis for optimizing the design of wind-solar complementary systems and energy storage planning.

According to research estimates, the maximum exploitable potential for wind and solar power in Ordos is 39.78 million kilowatts and 190.88 million kW, respectively.

Considering the variations in capacity factors, the exploitable resource ratio between wind and solar is 3.53:1. With a 97 percent reliability rate, the capacity factor increases from 0.031 to 0.0583, improving energy utilization efficiency.

This research lays a solid foundation for Ordos' future energy planning, particularly in hydrogen production, storage, and distributed energy development.

As the complementary characteristics of wind and solar resources are further applied, Ordos will progressively transition from traditional to renewable energy sources, contributing to the nation’s carbon neutrality goals.
