Juungar Banner's coal mines yield ecological benefits

Juungar Banner's green efforts in Ordos city have transformed the landscapes of coal mines and benefited locals economically.

On Oct 12, a media tour visited Inner Mongolia Juungar Liliang Coal Industry Co's Dafanpu Mine reclamation area in Juungar Banner and was impressed by its rapid development.

This year, the mine's orchard produced 80 metric tons of high-quality apples, while the vineyard yielded 70 tons of grapes, which are now being processed into wine.

Inner Mongolia Juungar Liliang Coal Industry Co has long prioritized ecological protection alongside resource extraction, implementing comprehensive greening projects in the reclamation area.

In 2018, the company established a subsidiary, Inner Mongolia Liangyun Agricultural Development Co, to focus on ecological restoration and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.

This initiative created an 880-mu (58.67 hectares) orchard, a 500-mu vineyard, and a boutique winery with an annual production capacity of 200 tons.

This has developed into an integrated eco-agricultural industry featuring cultivation, livestock, wine production, leisure, and tourism, turning reclamation into a profitable endeavor. In 2019, Dafanpu Mine was recognized as a national green mine.

Visitors are greeted by lush greenery, water features, and vibrant wildlife at the Zhunneng Mining Ecological Tourism Area within the Heidaigou and Haerwusu open-pit mines.

This area suffered from severe ecological degradation and soil erosion over 30 years ago, with vegetation cover below 25 percent.

Since the launch of the Juungar coalfield project in 1990, CHN Energy Zhunneng Group has adhered to the principles of simultaneous development and ecological protection. It established a robust soil and water conservation system that laid the groundwork for green mining.

Today, the approximately 17-square-kilometer reclamation area boasts a biodiversity park, a mining culture museum, and various attractions. It has created an industrial tourism zone that integrates industrial heritage preservation, coal science education, leisure tourism, and ecological civilization. This harmonious blend of open-pit mining and ecological construction exemplifies the coexistence of humans and nature.
