Ordos government work report highlights economic and social progress

Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has released its 2024 government work report, shedding light on the remarkable achievements it has made in economic development, technological innovation, ecological protection, and rural vitalization over the past year.

Economic growth

The city's GDP grew 6.4 percent to 636.3 billion yuan ($87.3 billion).

Its three main sectors demonstrated robust growth.

The primary industry was up by 5.3 percent.

The secondary industry saw a 7 percent increase, with the added value of manufacturing industry above designated size up 16.4 percent. Four industrial parks were recognized as high-level parks within the Inner Mongolia region.

The tertiary industry increased 5.5 percent, with profits of service enterprises above designated size rising 22.1 percent.

Fixed asset investment grew 23.3 percent, maintaining double-digit growth for 48 consecutive months.

Retail sales of consumer goods increased 7.8 percent, the fastest growth rate in Inner Mongolia.

Foreign trade reached 11.38 billion yuan.

Actual utilization of foreign capital ranked first in the region.

Project development

Construction began on the landmark "Photovoltaic Great Wall" in the Kubuqi Desert and the "One Corridor, Multiple Points" project in the Mu Us Sandy Land.

A 3.1 gigawatt integrated energy project was fully completed.

The world's largest "green hydrogen + coal-to-olefins" project and Inner Mongolia's first polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether production line were completed.

China's largest single-site coal mining subsidence area photovoltaic base was connected to the grid, boosting the region's total installed renewable energy capacity to 21.24 GW.

The added value of the new energy equipment manufacturing industry surged 261.3 percent.

Technological innovation

The city launched the updated "Tech Policy 2.0" and achieved the highest growth rate in R&D expenditure contributions in Inner Mongolia.

Ordos maintained its position in the Top 100 Cities for Innovation Capacity in China for the second consecutive year.

The added value of high-tech manufacturing skyrocketed 246.1 percent.

Ecological conservation

The city implemented 21 major anti-desertification projects under Phase VI of the Three-North Forest Shelterbelt Project, restoring 5 million mu (333,333.33 hectares) of desertified land. The greening rates of the Kubuqi Desert and Mu Us Sandy Land rose to 40 percent and 80 percent, respectively.

Energy consumption per unit of GDP fell 4.5 percent, achieving the "14th Five-Year Plan" (2021-25) targets ahead of schedule.

Rural vitalization

Grain production exceeded 2.25 billion kilograms.

The total value of key industries, including grains, wool, beef, mutton, and dairy, reached 56 billion yuan.

The city upgraded 875 kilometers of rural roads, 2,265 rural toilets, and improved electricity access for 1,219 remote households.

Seventeen rural water supply projects were completed, achieving full coverage of rural waste collection and disposal systems.

Employment and income

Social welfare spending accounted for 66.4 percent of the general public budget.

The city created 21,000 new urban jobs.

The per capita disposable incomes of urban and rural residents increased 5.1 percent and 6.1 percent, respectively.
