Ordos city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region is making significant strides toward fully electrifying its public transport system. According to the Ordos Transportation Service Center, the city's new energy bus electrification rate is among the highest in China.

Since the introduction of the first electric bus in September 2015, the number of electric buses in Ordos' central urban area has grown to 693, accounting for 93.65 percent of the total 740 operational buses.

"Since switching to electric buses, my commuting experience has greatly improved", said a frequent commuter. "These buses produce no emissions, are cleaner, quieter, and provide a smoother ride without the gear-shifting jolts of fuel-powered vehicles".

In November 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and seven other departments designated Ordos as one of 15 pilot cities for full electrification of public vehicles.

To further advance this initiative, Ordos introduced the Green Transportation Implementation Plan in July 2024, offering subsidies for the early replacement of natural gas buses. With policy support, the city aims to achieve 100 percent electric public transport by June 2025.

Ordos is also expanding its dedicated bus charging infrastructure. Eight charging stations, with 152 charging piles and a total output of 13,860 kW, have been established in the central urban area, significantly enhancing charging efficiency and convenience for public transport operations.
