Ordos city is taking the lead in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region to foster new quality productive forces by creating a top-tier innovation system and positioning itself as a pioneer in applied technology.
The city supports major hydrogen-related projects and focuses on hydrogen energy as a key sector in the region's "4+1" technology breakthrough initiative.
Recent projects include Ordos New Energy Research Institute's development of a distributed hydrogen energy system, Peking University's Ordos Research Institute of Energy study on natural hydrogen enrichment, and Ordos Guohong Hydrogen Energy Co's research on high-power fuel cells for mining vehicles and intelligent truck research.
A total of 27 million yuan ($3.71 million) in funding has been allocated to advance energy conversion, hydrogen exploration, and fuel cell technology.
Ordos is building hydrogen technology platforms to strengthen innovation, collaborate with top researchers, including academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science, and establish the Ordos New Energy Research Institute. The institute focuses on integrating wind, solar, hydrogen, and energy storage with breakthroughs such as a zero-carbon ammonia-hydrogen power system and an intelligent green hydrogen management system.
Ordos is also expanding hydrogen application scenarios and showcasing key achievements. At the 2024 World New Energy and New Materials Conference, the Ordos Carbon Neutrality Research Institute introduced a low-carbon hydrogen-powered smart park model.
Ordos-based Guosheng Lihua Hydrogen Equipment Co also exported its first modular low-power water electrolysis hydrogen production system to the US, marking a significant milestone in hydrogen technology.
