The Tenth Kubuqi International Desert Forum opened in Ordos on Sept 16, marking the start of a new "Kubuqi Time" in global desertification control.
Officials, experts, and representatives from over 40 countries and regions gathered for the two-day forum to share their experiences and explore innovative methods and technologies for scientific desert control and green development. The event highlighted China's latest achievements and "Chinese solutions" to desertification challenges.
As the world's only large-scale international forum dedicated to combating desertification, the Kubuqi forum continues to draw global attention. Delegates from Brazil expressed strong interest in China's desert control practices. Facing desertification threats in the Amazon rainforest, the Cerrado savanna, and semi-arid northeast, Brazilian participants said they hope to adapt China's experience to local needs.
"I came here to learn firsthand about China's expertise and innovative approaches to desertification control, and to explore possibilities for cooperation between Brazil and China," said Lu Kai, second secretary of the Embassy of Brazil in China.
Beatriz Azevedo de Araujo, founder of Verdeluz Institute, noted that Ordos has combined photovoltaic installations with vegetation restoration, creating synergies between desert control and industry. "This offers valuable insights for our sustainable regional transformation", she said.
Experts emphasized the forum's role not only as a platform for dialogue but also as a mechanism to promote global cooperation. Professor Paulo Alexander Da Silva Pereira of Mykolas Romeris University in Lithuania stressed: "We must work together to find localized solutions tailored to regional diversity, improving livelihoods while advancing ecological prosperity".
Ordos, a key battleground of China's Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, has long followed a governance model focusing on government leadership, enterprise involvement, and public participation. This approach has transformed the situation from one of "advancing deserts and retreating people" to one of "advancing greenery and retreating sands", strengthening ecological security in northern China.
"Desert control worldwide looks to China, and in China, it looks to Ordos," said Zhang Weidong, president of the Inner Mongolia Sand and Grass Industry Association. "This forum once again showcased Ordos' four defense lines against desertification, drawing international praise for its green development practices." Zhang added.
