The Tenth Kubuqi International Desert Forum concluded on Sept 17 in Ordos after two days of discussions, releasing two major initiatives – the China-Central Asia Desertification Control Partnership Initiative and the Global Desertification Monitoring and Digital Governance Initiative – along with the Kubuqi Forum Consensus. Together, they bring new momentum to global desertification control.
The China-Central Asia initiative addresses challenges such as desert expansion, vegetation degradation, and water scarcity, calling for stronger cooperation, technology sharing, and livelihood improvement. "We hope to turn desertification challenges into opportunities for green development," said Feng Zhanwen, head of the China-Central Asia Cooperation Center for Desertification Prevention and Control.
The global initiative focuses on building a near real-time monitoring platform, promoting digital technologies in desert control, and strengthening capacity building and data sharing. It invites broad participation from governments, international organizations, and academic institutions to advance ecological sustainability.
During the forum, experts from around the world shared research findings, showcased desert control technologies, and discussed policy and industry collaboration. The Kubuqi Forum Consensus emphasized that combating desertification is not only about ecological restoration but also about human dignity, advocating integrated, science-based approaches that align environmental protection with economic and social development.
