(chinadaily.com.cn)Updated: 2019-06-04

The coastal city of Weihai in East China's Shandong province boasts picturesque landscapes and 986 kilometers of coastline. It is home to 168 islands, which offer perfect destinations for visitors to spend a summer getaway at their leisure.

1. Liugong Island

Liugong Island, a small island located on the northeastern edge of Shandong Peninsula at the mouth of Weihai Bay, is a 5A tourism tourist attraction.

The island has been an important strategic location since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and it is known as the "birthplace of China's first modern navy." In 1888, the Northern Fleet was established and set up its headquarters on the island. However, six year later, the fleet was defeated by the Japanese navy during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95).

Visitors can have a look at many historical remains from the war and visit the Museum of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) on the island.
