Shanghai's Yangshan Deep Water Port reached a historic milestone in 2025, with container throughput surpassing 28.7 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), marking a 10.38 percent year-on-year increase, further solidifying its global position. This impressive performance was driven by several management innovations and smart technologies that boosted operational efficiency.
Yangshan Port has topped the Global Port Performance Index (CPPI) for three consecutive years, demonstrating its global leadership in port operations.
The port implemented a time-for-space approach to maximize efficiency, handling 9,181 international mainline vessels and 17,942 feeder vessels in 2025, representing 3.2 percent and 8.7 percent growth compared to 2024, respectively.
The port introduced innovative measures such as bidirectional navigation and dual-window departures, significantly improving port traffic flow and berth utilization, while maintaining a global-leading 84 percent utilization rate.
Yangshan also pioneered three-tier berthing operations, saving an average of 2 hours per vessel and unlocking an additional 1.08 million TEUs of capacity. This increased shoreline efficiency by 5 percent, generating about 300 million yuan ($42.88 million) in revenue and providing 80 million yuan in indirect economic benefits for shipping companies.
The port also advanced its green transformation, with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) refueling increasing by over 60 percent. As part of its plans, two new berths are expected to open by the end of 2026, further boosting Yangshan's capacity.
