The second National Youth Games Modern Pentathlon Preliminary Competition (Xiamen station) concluded recently at Xiamen's Haicang Sports Center in eastern Fujian province.

Top young athletes from across the country gathered to compete for a total of 33 gold medals.

According to the organizing committee, Xiamen's Haicang district is the perfect venue for the event due to its environment and infrastructure.

The 2020 World Modern Pentathlon Championship will take place in Haicang next year. Hundreds of talented athletes from more than 60 countries will compete at the Haicang sports center for spots at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport that comprises five different events: fencing (one-touch epee), freestyle swimming (200m), equestrian show jumping (15 jumps), and a final combined event of pistol shooting and cross country running (3200m).

The sport has been part of the Olympic Games since 1912, and a world championship has been held annually since 1949.
