Xiamen, in East China's Fujian province, had the fastest growth rate in elementary school enrollment among 33 key cities from 2008 to 2018, reaching 86.6 percent, according to China Business Network (CBN).

Public data being released by the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Education verifies the CBN report – in the academic year of 2008-2009, the number of elementary school students in Xiamen was 176,167, while the number for 2018-2019 was 328,848, an increase of 86.6 percent, reflecting the coastal city's growing popularity

Experts believe that urban migrants are mainly young people. If they can enjoy job stability and children's education resources, the number of their city's elementary school students will generally increase.

Therefore, a high growth rate of that number means that the students' parents (young adults) are flocking into the city.

Ding Changfa, an associate professor of economics at Xiamen University, said that the best public educational resources in China are concentrated in the nine national central cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai. However, Xiamen is proud of its overall high-level education, which ranks top in Fujian province.
