Macao Bridge, the fourth cross-sea bridge in the special administrative region, opened on this year's National Day. The construction of Macao's first eight-lane bridge started in March 2020 and was completed on March 12 this year.
The 3.08-kilometer bridge, with a 2.86-kilometer cross-sea section, is located east of the Ponte de Amizade, or Bridge of Friendship. It links the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge with the southern part of Macao, providing a more direct route for travelers to reach Taipa and Cotai.
Macao Bridge, designed with a lifespan of 100 years, is expected to share 25 percent of the vehicle traffic between the Macao Peninsula and Taipa, equivalent to 40,000 vehicles a day, according to Yang Song, a senior manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. In consideration of the extreme weather conditions, such as wind balls, the bridge is also designed with windshields to reduce the wind speed for safety.
