Five Paris Paralympic champions, Jiang Yuyan, Di Dongdong, Zhao Shuai, Tan Yujiao and Guo Jincheng, visited Peking University on Sept 21 to share their inspiring stories with students and faculty.

At the Paris Paralympics, swimmer Jiang Yuyan amassed seven gold medals and four world records at the Paris Paralympics, "It’s swimming that gave me confidence, courage, and the drive for life," she said, outlining her journey as an athlete with disabilities and the inspiration she derives from swimming. She emphasized that the sport has instilled her with confidence and courage and,drawing from her own experiences, she encouraged students to pursue their own dreams through hard work and persistence, highlighting the importance of learning from past challenges.
Building on this theme of resilience, track and field athlete Di Dongdong, who broke a decade-old world record in Paris, shared his personal journey of rehabilitation through sports after he had lost his sight. Di inspired the students to confront challenges with bravery and determination.
Zhao Shuai, who has now competed in four Paralympic Games as a table tennis player, reflected on his journey to securing gold in the table tennis mixed doubles with his partner. He recalled the early days of struggling to win, emphasizing the hard work and dedication required to overcome obstacles, supported by his coach and teammates. Zhao encouraged the students in attendance at the university’s Centennial Auditorium to diligently pursue their dreams and urged his fellow people with disablities to embrace challenges and create their own extraordinary lives.
"Disability has not become an insurmountable barrier in my life, nor has it hindered my pursuit of happiness and excellence," said Weightlifter Tan Yujiao. She secured her third consecutive Paralympic gold in Paris as well as setting her 21st world record, is an inspiring figure in the global sports community. As the first Chinese athlete appointed to the International Paralympic Committee's new Athlete Council, she encouraged participants to overcome disabilities with determination and resilience, emphasizing that these qualities are essential for tackling adversity.
Guo Jincheng made an impressive debut as a swimmer in Paris, capturing four gold and two silver medals while breaking four world records. He shared his unique training methods and dedication during the event, encouraging others to persist through challenging periods in their lives.
During the interactive session, the Paralympic champions engaged with students on topics such as overcoming physical and mental challenges, pushing personal limits and promoting barrier-free environments. The event marked the beginning of an initiative where Paralympic athletes will visit universities to share their experiences and inspire young people.
