A garden concert at Jichang Garden in Wuxi brought together Chinese violinist Ning Feng and musicians from Germany's Potsdam Chamber Orchestra for an East-West performance in a classic Jiangnan setting.
At the square in front of Woyun Hall, Ning and the orchestra performed A Good Night (Liang Xiao) by Liu Tianhua, a Jiangyin-born composer.
The visitors also explored Huishan Ancient Town and Yingyueli Block, stopping at Huishan Temple, the Second Spring Under Heaven, ancestral halls, Ah Bing Square and Xuanyue Stage to experience Wuxi's musical heritage and rich culture.
Ning, a gold medalist at the Paganini International Violin Competition and the first student in 200 years to earn full marks upon graduating from London's Royal College of Music in 2003, said he had visited Wuxi before, but had never been to Huishan Ancient Town or Yingyueli.
"One word came to mind: stunning," he said. "Wuxi has built a wonderful platform for people in China and around the world who love culture. Playing Chinese music with Western instruments in front of ancient Chinese architecture is an incredible fusion across time and space."
The Potsdam Chamber Orchestra is a leading European ensemble and four-time winner of Germany's OPUS classical music award. Violist Guenthner Ralph said that performing traditional Chinese music in an ancient town was both a first and a challenge. "Many people came to the town," he said. "It was wonderful to perform such beautiful music for them."
