Source: en.qstheory.cn Updated: 2024-09-18

Pingjiang Road is the most well-preserved historic and cultural block in the ancient city of Suzhou in East China’s Jiangsu Province. It is a hub where renowned intangible cultural heritage, including Kunqu Opera, Pingtan (Suzhou storytelling and ballad singing), and exquisite Suzhou embroidery, thrive. These traditions come alive, imbuing the alleys with the captivating charm of the authentic life style in ancient Suzhou. In 2002, Suzhou launched a preservation and renovation project for Pingjiang Road. In 2012, the Suzhou National Historical and Cultural Famous City Protection Zone was established, further solidifying the city’s commitment to safeguarding its invaluable heritage. Protecting, cultivating and inheriting the cultural essence of the Pingjiang historic and cultural block require not only the restoration of its architecture, but also passing on its cultural elements. Today, residents in the block are custodians of this cultural legacy, benefitting from the improved living environment.
