With summer heating up and the excitement of the 2026 World Cup alongside the Fujian Football City League in full swing, beer imports to Fujian have surged, with the province importing 430 million yuan ($63.3 million) worth of beer in the first five months of this year, up 26.9 percent year on year, accounting for 27.4 percent of the national total and ranking first among all Chinese provinces.
Private enterprises have been the driving force behind Fujian's surge in beer imports, bringing in 320 million yuan worth of beer between January and May, up 28.9 percent year on year and making up 73.5 percent of the province's total. Foreign invested enterprises, meanwhile, imported 110 million yuan over the same period — a rise of nearly one third and accounting for just over a quarter of the total.
Thanks to their superior brewing craftsmanship and distinctive flavor profiles, beers from the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy are highly popular among Chinese consumers, with Fujian importing 410 million yuan worth of beer from the European Union, up 26.9 percent year on year, accounting for 95 percent of the province's total beer imports during the period and making the EU its largest source of imported beer. Meanwhile, imports from ASEAN stood at 15.07 million yuan, a 28.2 percent increase year on year.
