The 18th Talent Show for Overseas Students in Xiamen took place at the city’s Magic Minnan Theater on Dec 5 to encourage overseas students to learn Chinese and Minnan (southern Fujian) culture. The event was also used as an opportunity to strengthen the mutual exchange and friendship between students from Xiamen and overseas countries.
The talent show was co-sponsored by Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office in Xiamen Municipal Government, Overseas Chinese News and Minnan Travel and Cultural Industry Co. Many schools took part in the event, including Xiamen University, Huaqiao University, Jimei University, Xiamen Foreign Language School and two international schools.
Students from sponsored schools gave theatrical performance at the talent show, which has been held successively for 17 years since 1998. The event aimed to help overseas students learn about the long history and diversified Minnan culture and the further understand Xiamen through diverse performances.
The distinctive Minnan culture originated in southern Fujian province and is an important part of Chinese culture. It includes aspects of folk culture, religion and architecture.
