Reading event starts as Xiamen, Penang celebrate friendship
The seventh publications exhibition tour in Southeast Asia was held in Penang, Malaysia on May 27, to celebrate 30 years of Xiamen-Penang sister-city relations.
Books of various kinds such as Chinese classics and popular science were exhibited.
In all, over 500 books were donated to the Penang Chinese Town Hall and primary and secondary schools in Penang.
Zhang Quan, director general of the Xiamen Foreign Affairs Office, said that since the formal establishment of the relationship between Xiamen and Penang in 1993, fruitful results had been achieved between the two cities thanks to frequent commerce, trade and cultural exchanges.
Zhou Youbin, the Chinese Consul General in Penang, said that this year marked the 10th anniversary of the China-ASEAN community with a shared future and the 20th anniversary of China's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
He called on the peoples of Penang and Xiamen to deepen their understanding and friendship through the event.
