E-commerce retailer delivers on robotics
JD.com has showcased its latest technology in warehouse logistics and distribution, from unmanned picking and order systems to remote delivery drones.
The display from the e-commerce retailer was one of the highlights at the 2017 National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week, held in Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park from Sept 15 to 21.
Drones, unmanned small-sized vehicles and automatic guided vehicles (AGV) are all being applied to JD's industrial chain in order to make its business at the cutting edge as the retail and delivery industry continues to transform.

JD's electric drone was demonstrated at the event, displaying good flight stability and wind resistance, as well as the ability to carry loads of up to 10 kilograms within a 20-kilometer radius. It can automatically unload and is monitored throughout its flight, making it suitable for deliveries in remote areas.

An unmanned small-sized vehicle capable of carrying loads of 100 kg can be used for urban deliveries, according to JD. The vehicle can travel to office buildings and residential areas where customers can unlock their parcels using the company's mobile app or facial recognition.
JD AGV, a small robot which uses inertial navigation and QR Code recognition technologies can change its route flexibly. It has a maximum moving speed of two meters per second.
