The first Fishing Culture Festival was held in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in Wuxi's Xinwu district on Sept 1.
The festival's launching ceremony was attended by a number of government officials and featured a wide range of lively activities, including dance performances, cycling, a fishing culture fair, and fishery products.

"The water quality in Taihu Lake improved a lot this year, and more fish are being caught than ever before", said a fisherman from Xinwu. In recent years, Xinwu district has been devoting itself to protecting the environment and strengthening local ecosystems in hopes of improving both the fishing and tourism industries.

Xin'an Street of Xinwu district runs along Taihu Lake for 7.8 kilometers. In recent years, the street has been putting more effort into water source management and ecological tourism around the lake.
