According to foreign media reports, the latest research shows that high-tech chips implanted in the human brain can quickly enhance human intelligence. In recent years, scientists have been working on developing minimally invasive ways to invade the brain and tap into greater human potential.
Dr. Moran Cerf, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University, said that the latest science and technology expects to archieve this goal in the following five years. But he warned that this approach may also lead to new inequalities.
"The high-tech human brain chip can realize network interconnection and visit the Wikipedia website. When I think about some special ideas, the human brain chip will quickly provide us with an answer," said Dr. Cerf.
Currently, neuroscientists and business professors are working on developing such human brain chips, with the goal of improving human intelligence by incorporating the latest technology.
Besides, with the progresses made by Elon Musk's Neuralink program and other technical projects dedicated to the development of brain-computer interface, the concept of human brain chips has also rapidly evolved.
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) also showed continued interest in the field as it seeks to improve soldiers' cognitive ability and technical mastery.
Dr. Cerf told reporters that recently everyone is trying to spend a lot of time on installing devices into their brains, instead of drilling holes in the skull. Although these chips are placed in the brain, it’s been said to not affect normal life and work of human beings.
In July 2018, the US DARPA selected a number of research teams to develop a neural interface to be part of the latest N3 program. The goal of this development plan is to enable military soldiers to send and receive information through brainwaves.
This means that one day the military will be able to control drones, cyber defense systems and other technologies with their minds.
How does the US military "hack" the soldiers' brains?
The four-year "Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT)" program of the US DARPA aims to accelerate the learning process with the peripheral nervous system.
This will be realized by electrical stimulation to activate "synaptic plasticity", a key process in the brain that participates in learning. Some research groups are working with intelligence analysts and foreign language experts to create such a training platform.
Researchers will study how to apply the technology to decision-making, space navigation, speech perception, and threat identification. Robert Rennaker from the Biomedical Devices Center at the University of Texas at Dallas, mentioned, "Imagine that you are trying to learn something new, such as a multiplication table or golf, when you do it right, the corresponding light bulb will illuminate, which means the system is activated."
By stimulating lost nerves during the learning process, we can artificially release these chemicals, thereby enhancing the active neural connections in the learning process.
