A Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister and Union Attorney-General Dr Thida Oo attended the 16th China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference and the related 1st ASEAN Prosecutors-General Meeting, held from 21 to 22 October in Jerudong, Brunei Darussalam, at the invitation of Bruneian Attorney-General Datin Seri Paduka Dayang Hajah Nor Hashimah.
The conference, themed "Harmonizing Legal Frameworks and International Cooperation to Protect Children in the Digital Era", brought together Chinese Prosecutor-General Mr Ying Yong and counterparts from across ASEAN. Speaking at the forum, Dr Thida Oo highlighted the China-ASEAN conference's two-decade legacy in strengthening regional legal cooperation and tackling transnational crime. She noted that while digital advancements offer significant educational and creative benefits to youths, they simultaneously heighten exposure to online exploitation, scams, human trafficking, and harmful content. Emphasizing that cross-border digital offences cannot be handled by any single nation in isolation, she stressed the imperative for close alignment among regional legal systems.
She elaborated that Myanmar enacted the Child Rights Law in 2019 and established the National Committee on the Rights of the Child (NCRC) to oversee policy coordination.
To confront emerging threats in cyberspace, the country is also implementing cybersecurity, anti-online scam, and human trafficking prevention laws, alongside dedicated child-protection guidelines.
Reaffirming Myanmar's commitment to working alongside China and ASEAN partners to cultivate a safer digital ecosystem for younger generations, she noted that safeguarding children is vital to the stability of the entire region.
The conference concluded with the prosecutors-general signing the Joint Declaration of the 16th China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference.
