Headed by Jiang Daming, vice-chairman of the Committee on Population, Resources and Environment of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a survey team was sent to South China's Hainan province to promote the coordinated protection and development of marine resources.
The survey team pointed out that as those resources are plentiful in Hainan, the province has huge potential in marine economy.
The province is expected to utilize its resource endowment as well as the favorable policies and opportunities brought by the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Local governments must be committed to industrial upgrading, reforms and innovation to push forward the high-quality development of the marine economy, said the team.
During the survey, the team visited Chengmai county, the Yangpu Economic Development Zone and cities such as Haikou, Dongfang and Sanya where it held symposiums, one of which was attended by Mao Wanchun, chairman of the CPPCC Hainan Provincial Committee, and made suggestions to local authorities.
The team suggested raising awareness about marine conservation and balancing protection against exploitation. It expected Hainan to lead the country in the marine economy.
